In the end I am more disillusioned and pessimistic than before I read it. Sometimes it's facts; sometimes it's subtler stuff like perceptions, analyses and open questions.
1. Open City is an exceptional novel.
Its intense, detailed and specific narrative, unravelling inside the mind of one man, Julius - a young Nigerian-German doctor completing his residency in psychiatry in a New York hospital - brings the city of new York hauntingly to life in a different, slower, deeper way from anything I've ever read. Excellent seller and shipping. (This latter fact applies to me growing up. I am this girl obsessed with some stupid drugy person who committed suicidewell think again. A very enjoyable read. Also, the narrative constantly confuses by jumping back and forth in time. I do wish that more craft books came with a spiral binding.. Upon first look, this edition is smaller in size than a typical book of this type, but large enough to fully appreciate the great pictures.
